Lip Blushing: What to Expect

Want the effect of plumper, more luscious lips without the risk of lip fillers? Permanent lip blushing is a safer alternative to injections, and will give your lips that same voluminous allure. As the name suggests, the treatment gives your lips a subtle, yet defining blush of color, customized to your skin tone, neutral lip color and preferences. At ‘A Nurse’s Touch’ we’ll make sure you leave feeling radiant and satisfied with the result.

What to expect during the treatment

Our state-of-the-art permanent makeup machine uses specialized nano needles that deposit color at just the right skin depth for optimal longevity and comfort.

We’ll apply specialized numbing cream to your lips, followed by FDA-approved pigments that are number one on the market in terms of quality and safety. Between the numbing, outlining and tattooing of the lips, you can expect the lip blushing treatment to take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours.

Generally, clients experience minimal discomfort due to the numbing cream. However, how you feel during the treatment may depend on your pain tolerance.

There are a few measures you can take to prepare for your appointment. You should:

  • Avoid alcohol 24 hours before your lip blushing appointment.
  • Avoid sun tanning, dermaplaning, laser treatment, chemical peels and microdermabrasion 7-10 days before getting your lip blush treatment.
  • Refrain from taking any medications that cause blood thinning (e.g. Advil).
  • Try not to consume caffeine the day of your appointment.

You should also note that lip fillers must be done at least 1 month before a lip blushing treatment.

All lip blushing at ‘A Nurse’s Touch’ is done by Michelle Winters and Daisy Williams.

What to expect after the treatment

You may experience some swelling and redness, as well as dryness and texture after the treatment — though as your lips heal, swelling will go down and lips will naturally exfoliate. This process of healing, which might feel like a light sunburn, can take 3 to 4 days.

While your lips heal, you can use a moisturizing cream such as Aquafor, to speed up the process. You should also avoid picking at any scabs or removing flakes, as you may remove the pigment and cause uneven coloring.

Once your lips are healed, you can expect the lip blush to last anywhere between 2 to 3 years, though clients tend to get a color booster after 14 months.

Other things to remember while your lips are in the process of healing:

  • Avoid teeth whitening, direct sun exposure and smoking.
  • Stay away from hot, spicy or salty foods as they may cause irritation.
  • It’s normal for lips to have texture in the first few days of healing.
  • Try not to put cosmetic products on unhealed lips.

If you’d like to adjust your lip color, or make it more vibrant, you can get a touch up. We generally offer touch-ups 8 weeks after the initial treatment and on a yearly basis at a reduced price. Touch-ups usually tend to take less time than the first treatment.
